A Man's Real Measure

"The place to take the true measure of a man is not in the darkest place or in the amen corner, nor the cornfield, but by his own fireside.

There he lays aside his mask and you may learn whether he is an imp or an angel, cur or king, hero or humbug.

I care not what the world says of him: whether it crowns him boss or pelts him with bad eggs.

I care not a copper what his reputation or religion may be: if his babies dread his home-coming and his better half swallows her heart every time she has to ask him for a five-dollar  bill, he is a fraud of the  first water, even though he prays night and morning until he is black in the face and howls hallelujah until he shakes the  eternal hills.

But if his children rush to the front door to meet him and loves sunshine illuminates the face of his wife every time she hears his foot-fall, you can take it for granted that he is pure, for his home is a heaven-and the humbug never gets that near the great white throne of God.

He may be a rank atheist and red-flag anarchist, a Mormon and a mugwump; he may buy votes in blocks of five, and bet on the  elections; he may deal 'em from the bottom of the deck and drink beer until he can't tell a silver dollar from a circular saw, and still be an infinitely better man than the cowardly little humbug who is all suavity in society but who makes home a hell, who vents upon the helpless heads of his wife and children an ill nature he would inflict on his fellow men but dares not.

I can forgive much in that fellow mortal who would rather make men swear than women weep; who would rather have the hate of the whole world than the contempt of his wife; who would rather call anger to the eyes of a king than fear to the face of a child."

From My Friend Pamela Phelps On Facebook

Pamela wanted us to share this....

To any friend who might need this... Did you know the people that are the strongest are usually the most sensitive? Did you know the people who exhibit the most kindness are the first to get mistreated? Did you know the one who takes care of others all the time are usually the ones who need it the most? Did you know the 3 hardest things to say are I love you, I'm sorry, and Help me. Sometimes just because a person looks happy, you have to look past their smile and see how much pain they may be in. To all my friends who are going through some issues right now--

Let's start an intention avalanche. We all need positive intentions right now. If I don't see your name, I'll understand. May I ask my friends wherever you might be, to kindly copy and paste this status for one hour to give a moment of support to all those who have family problems, health struggles, job issues, worries of any kind and just need to know that someone cares. Do it for all of us, for nobody is immune. I hope to see this on the walls of all my friends just for moral support. Shared via my good friend Dan Moon.

FEATURED ARTIST - Derrick Rathgeber

  Derrick the Artist
Derrick the Artist 2

Please read what Derrick has to say and check out his beautiful work at the links above. A terrific artist!

Bio - My name is Derrick Rathgeber, and I am a Colored Pencil Artist.
I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. As a child I found myself finding anything and everything to draw and doodle on. From receipts to brown grocery bags, nothing was off limits. I would lose myself into my imagination by creating characters, cool creatures, and even whole worlds for them to live in.
As I grew older I wanted to learn how to make my characters look more realistic, and make the world they live in come alive. I couldn’t afford lessons, and I didn’t have a mentor so I watched and studied cartoons, and animated movies. When kids were watching them for entertainment, I was trying to figure out how they worked. I was enamored with artwork coming to life. I wanted to do that.
In the year 2000 I got an opportunity to attend Collins College. There I had my chance to learn how to do real life animation. It was one of the greatest and most difficult times of my life. On one hand I got to learn from a legend that worked on several Don Bluth films, and on the other hand the world of traditional animation has been lost to computer animation. I graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree in 2005, and decided to move back towards family with my newly wedded wife, and our daughter.
With new experiences as a father and husband, I started to draw more pictures of things that reminded me of them like fairies, flowers, and animals. These are drawings that I don’t think I would have drawn had not for being inspired by them. Over time I found that I really found that I had a talent for capturing the colors of the world.
I am now 31 years old with four great children and art has become a large part of our lives. My wife writes great poetry and each of my kids has a knack for coloring and drawing fantastic pictures. My oldest daughter has this uncanny ability to craft objects like her mom. We enjoy creating things as a family. A lot of these crafts we will be sharing with your family down the road. But for now I will be sharing what I have learned over the years and my experiences with RoseArt colored pencils.
I choose to use them for many reasons. They overlay and blend together like no other. I am able to get new colors without losing the color I am going for. As a father to four children I can easily afford them. Honestly, regardless of the price I would still use this brand. I have used them for many years, I have had great results, and I have won many art competitions using them.
I now have the opportunity of sharing my work with you, and teach you everything I know one post at a time. I will bring you step by step lessons that will show you how to use each RoseArt color pencil in your arsenal to add color and imagination to your life.
“Let us make this world full of art and creativity together.”

10 Things That Annoy Me!

1) When I misplace my stuff -
Mostly it's my glasses. And the whole time they are on top of my head. Yeah I know, you don't have to say it, but I know for a fact you all have done the same stupid stuff.

Sometimes it's my phone, and I have to use my other phone to call myself to see where its hiding.   He He.

2) When my Internet crashes - I'm usually right in the middle of something important and loose it all.

3)  When someone rides my ass on the freeway - Get in the left lane and pass if your in that big of a hurry!

4) When people think it's all about Them Them and Them!

5) When people stop to talk and you can't get around them. Show some respect guys and take it to the side somewhere. Stop blocking the isles!

6) When I do the laundry and I end up with only 1 sock. What happened to the other one? They were both in there to start off with. I guess the machine got hungry, cause I'm still looking for that 1 sock, and it's been a month; alright already. I've searched high and low! Nowhere is it to be found!

7) When I say something to someone, but mean to say something else, but don't just so I don't hurt their feelings. But in truth, it really needed to be said.

8) When I'm watching a really good movie, and something is about to happen, and go figure, the cable went out!

9) When I'm expecting that important phone call, but they don't call till your sitting on the toilette!

10) Last but not least - When I totally forget what the 10th Annoying item was going to be!

Wisdom

Click Here To View My "Words Of Wisdom " Painting

There is no short-cut, no patent tram-road, to wisdom.

After all the centuries of invention, the soul's path lies through the thorny wilderness which must still be trodden in solitude, with bleeding feet, with sobs for help, as it was trodden by them of old time.

Movie - YOUVE GOT MAIL

To Purchase This Poster Click Here

Another Romantic Charmer in an older movie "YOU'VE GOT MAIL" starring Meg Ryan as (Kathleen Kelly) and Tom Hanks as (Joe Fox). Those two continue to make magic together. The two Bookstore Owners meet over the Internet and fall in love, but are unaware that they share a degree of animosity towards one another. It soon starts to unravel for the couple and the daggers begin. A lovely romantic comedy, one that will stay in my must have Movies.

Movie - NOTTING HILL

All you women surely know the Movie “NOTTING HILL” and I would guess the men in your life probably had to watch it with you, or at least familiar with it. Beautiful Julia Roberts as Anna Scott, portraying, well, a movie star. And another favorite of mine in this movie is wonderful Hugh Grant playing the bookstore owner. Well it is one of my favorite movies that just happened to be on lifetime last night, so I had to watch it for the hundredth time.

Anyway it inspired me to do this poster.

Hope you like!!

Music

"If music be the fool of love, play on." - SHAKESPEARE

My thoughts-

If you listen closely you can hear the music in all things. Open your eyes, hear the songs. They are everywhere. You stand in a place you've shared a special moment with someone, and it brings back memories and music from that time. Yes, there is music wherever there is harmony in our lives. Just take time to listen.

You can eat, taste and smell music. A walk in the rain will remind you of a song long past. The sense of taste and smell of a specific food drives senses to the brain and reminds you of a specific song that was playing when you were with someone sharing that bagel or drinking that latte. Yes, the sound of music brings senses to the soul.

You can bring pain or wash out the pain with the sound of music. What power it has over you!

There is music in poetry, an emotional part of our nature. The rhymes we play out in our head.

Music is an art of bringing peace and joy to our hearts. Listen on I say, enjoy the warmth it brings on a cloudy day.

So what exactly is music to you? To me it is spirit, an uplifting phenomena, a longing, a time lost in space, and a remembrance of those long gone.

Cherish the music within you, and listen to what it is saying. Let it bring peace and joy as it should.

Have a MERRY day everyone!!!!!!

There was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe

Did you know there were  many other variations that were printed in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Wikipedia shares that "Marjorie Ainsworth Decker published a Christian version of the rhyme in her "The Christian Mother Goose Book" published in 1978 which goes like this:

There was an old woman
Who lived in a shoe,
She had so many children,
And loved them all, too.
She said, "Thank you Lord Jesus,
For sending them bread."
Then kissed them all gladly
and sent them to bed.
The Abstract picture I shared with you above is a piece I did that reminds me of this Nursery Rhyme.

Social Media

Wow! I was never a tech geek, and never would have thought I'd be a part of this craze, but here I am.

So overwhelming with all the networking sites to muddle through. Just when I thought I had one Networking site figured out, another one creeps up into my life.

Good Grief! Accounts, Profiles, Groups, Networks, Forums, Blogs, Uploading, Downloading, Posting, Tweeting. YIKES!!!!! HELP!!!

But in all honesty, I would be bored without it.

How many sites does a normal person have?
How many do you have?
Which ones do you find are the best out there?

I know this blogging thing has been around for ages, so now that I'm part of it I'm going to have fun with it. Hopefully I'll figure it all out. I see most bloggers stick to specific topics, but for me, I'd find that way too boring.

From me, you'll get a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Hey if nothing else, just come along for the ride. You may need a laugh to get you started in the morning! Not because I'm funny or anything.

I just saw a guy tweet about Perseverance. "Perseverance may be the top character quality of successful people. Not about looks or IQ, DON'T QUIT" I like that!

At any rate, I hope you all a fun and safe weekend! Till next time

Cheers!!
